Star Maps

Star Maps is a collection of twelve short pieces, each inspired by a different symbol of the astrological zodiac chart (in reverse order). Superimposed over this structure is the circle of fifths which designates a different key to each symbol/piece. Some pieces are set mostly within their assigned major key, some in the relative minor, and others move more fluidly through the different tonal centers. Most pieces can be extracted and performed separately, except for "Aries" and "Pisces" because they are performed attacca. Lastly, pedal changes in parenthesis are in preparation for the new key of the proceeding piece; however, as with any other pedal changes, the specific placement is left to the performer' s preference.

Strata

Strata is a brief exploration of a motive that gradually moves through the different registers of the flute. It makes use of extended techniques and diagrams pioneered by Robert Dick in his book The Other Flute. The resulting piece acts as a etude for flutists to practice and implement these techniques into their performance.
