ORCHESTRA

Dark Houses

Full orchestra 2016 / 11’00”

Dark Houses combines the familiar textures of the orchestra with three extraneous sounds: the white noise of a television, wind chimes, and a tape recording of two Bach pieces. The purpose is to highlight the disparity between the orchestra (representing subjective and fluid emotional responses) and the three featured sounds (representing objective and fixed external experiences).

Sea Song and Variations

Full orchestra 2014 / 4’50”

Taking a simple theme, Sea Song and Variations develops the material into various versions. The tune is reminiscent of a sea shanty and threads throughout the instrument groups. It finally returns to the original instrument, the clarinet, and the piece ends with a bombastic finish.

Aurora Borealis

Full orchestra 2013 / 6’20”

The main focus of the piece is the indeterminate quality of sounds between each segment of time. Notation is proportional and the note values are approximate. Overall, the sound is meant to be one of elasticity and change. The performers are not expected to enact the figures the same way each time they are repeated. The notation is meant to give parameters for performance, yet leaves room for flexibility.
